A functional replica of a specific ethnographic bow in the collections of the Catawba Indian Nations Museum in South Carolina. This bow from the Catawba tribe was originally made in Black Locust, and measured 57 inches long and 1 and 1/4th inches widest at handle. We have followed that exactly with this Black Locust bow in the same flat cross sections. Holding to those strict dimensions lead to a bow with several inches of reflex after test shots, and a pull of 30 lbs of pull at 28 inches. This was weaker than expected, and might be due to the slight bit of inner pith shown in the last picture above. The weight was lower than expected, but otherwise showed to be a faithful example of a Black Locust Catawba style bow, worked to one growth ring in the same authentic style and measurements of the original. This bow is functional, but dimensions lead to a flatbow that bends more in the handle than modern style shooters might be used to. The bow would make a great display example of Eastern Woodlands ethnographic bows at time of contact, and comes with a new string so it can be shot and tested if desired.
