A new functional replica of an ethnographic Pawnee tribe bow.  The original bow was illustrated in Hamm and Allely's book Encyclopedia of Native American Bows and Arrows/Plains and Southwest edition, from the private John Welsch collection. The original was made in Ash, and our replica follows in Ash(White)and in the dimensions given by Hamm/Allely. Roughly 52.5 inches long, 1 and 5/16ths at widest at handle, and tapering to half inch nocks. The illustrated gull wing shape is stiff and rounded at handle, with flexible flat limbs towards a slightly "whip tillered" outer third. The description mentions faint red paint staining on back of bow, and we have done the same, after carefully working to one growth ring.  Following dimensions, tillering lead to a bow pulling 40 lbs at 22 inches of draw.  At this point the bow pull started to stack and chrysal on belly, leading to the conclusion that this bow would be strained past 22 inches of draw length at the short length of 52 inches.  It was sanded and retillered to be finished at 22 inch draw. This means that our replica is tested ONLY to 22 inches in the short draw, or snap draw, and should not be pulled past this length.  This is very different than our modern sport longbows pulled and held to chin.  This bow was made for demonstration and/or display of native bow making techniques, and comes with new string for possible testing.  Although meant for teaching, it is fully functional for shooting, with care taken not to be pulled past draw length of 22 inches.  It should be considered a dangerous and possibly deadly weapon, and customer is responsible for safe use of this weapon.
