A LITHIC CAST of the Folsom projectile point, that is considered to be the type point for the Folsom Culture.  This particular point is very important to archaeology, as it was found in 1927 in Folsom, New Mexico, within(in situ) the bones of the extinct Bison antiquus.  This discovery significantly changed the scientific views of the time, concerning the arrival of peoples in the Americas, showing clear association with extinct Ice Age megafauna.  The time of the Folsom Culture arrives around 10,900 to 9,500 years ago, and the range is mostly the western US, from the Great Basin to the Great Lakes, and up to Canada and as far south as past the border of Texas. This point was first molded and cast by Calvin Smith, with permission of Dr. Marie Wormington at the Denver Museum of Natural History, where the artifact was stored.  It was requested by Dr. Agogino of the Black Water Draw Museum to compliment the exhibit there in 1970.  This first generation molding and casting was loaned to Occpaleo in 2025, for those wanting to learn about and interpret the history of archaeology in the New World.  The point cast measures 44mm long, and 20mm wide, and no thicker than 3mm at any area.  It was cast in the color of the "paleo flint" that is found in New Mexico, and only around 2mm thick between the flutes.  This is almost an impossible feat for modern flintknappers, showing Folsom stone tool work to be among the finest in the world and throughout history.
