A LITHIC CAST of an authentic Folsom projectile point found in southeastern New Mexico, on the Mescalero ridge on the southwestern edge of the Llano Estacado, near the Horse Camp site between Hobbs and Carlsbad, New Mexico. The point measures 47mm long, and 22mm at the widest, and the material is Edwards Plateau. It is only 3mm at the thickest, and is fluted past tip on both sides, which were pressure flaked back toward base to produce a super sharp and thin entry tip. The Folsom Culture is a transitional Paleo period in the Late Pleistocene after the end of the Ice Age(around 10,900-9,500 years ago) and is associated with the hunting of bison. One of the first examples was found near Folsom, New Mexico, in association with the bones of an extinct species of bison(Bison antiquus), enlightening the scientific community and the world concerning the peopling of the Americas. Folsom stone tool work is considered today to be the pinnacle of flintknapping skill, with the dangerous move of fluting a very thin biface to the absolute limit. This example showcases the wide and full flutes to the tip, that are the hallmark of this culture. Cast copyright Occpaleo 2025
