A modern experimental model, made to the dimensions of the "Otzi the Iceman" copper axe found in the Alps around 5,200 years ago. A previous model was first made here in pure copper and hafted in handle for use testing. Before hafting, that replica was molded so that future models could be made with casting techniques, as it was discovered that the original copper axe was made from a mold, and cold hammered. This axe bit shown above was an experiment of the "cold casting" modern technique, where real copper powder is mixed with resin(here 50% copper), so that a classroom might have an example that was correct dimensions within milimeter tolerances, and also have the weight and cold texture of real metal. This piece was used for several talks on the subject of the Iceman find and its importance to archaeology, and was not hafted for use. We are currently experimenting with copper amounts in new models to be hafted up for use tests. This example in this sale is now offered for display teaching collection only, and was not tested for field use.
