This is a USED atlatl model for the Clearance Collection.  It is a replica of a throwing board from the Inuit collection in Smithsonian's Natural History Museum.  Examined in 1998, it was made for experiments here and then retired.  It was first made with a square spur peg with tiny spike, to hold the soft butt of cedar darts, to follow that seen on original artifact.  After testing, that spur was replaced with the current FAUX ivory epoxy spur, in the style of our modern sport atlatl throwers so that it could be testing for land throwing instead of downward kayak angle throwing boards.  The original was labeled AK(Alaska) General, and in the same drawer collection with Nunivak Alaska, and was also made in unknown driftwood. Our model here is made in Red Cedar driftwood.  The original was likely a western Pacific Cedar driftwood, making ours not a strict replica and only following the driftwood idea in spirit.  It measures 17 inches, and is for a right hander.  It has been restored to like new condition, with the new spur set to go for modern target atlatl darts.
