A MODERN knapped point, in the style of a Mesoamerican point type studied here in recent years. It was made here in 2026 out of Obsidian volcanic glass, and diamond scribed as a modern point. It was inspired by an original in the collections of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, that had exceptional regular pressure flaking, which was more precise that the majority of those known. The culture is most famous for its pyramids and city complex in the Valley of Mexico, but it had much larger expanse of influence in Central America, which started around 200BC and lasted until around 700AD. It was the largest urban center of Mesoamerica before the Aztecs, with a possible population of over 150,000 at its peak. The trade of obsidian is considered to be one of the factors leading to the success of this culture, and this style of point was used for the atlatl dart weaponry of the warrior class. It measures 4 and 3/8th inches long, and was made in traditional manner here at Occpaleo by flintknapper Michael Frank after examination of original artifact.
